THE NEW NEW YORK ANIMATION
New York 's independent animation
When we talk about independent animation filmmaking in the U.S, specifically animation, we have to understand that the term “independent” mostly defines financial means. To be specific, independent means self financed projects. New York City is a place of constant inspiration and diversity. Combine the two, and you have New York's animation community, that is still innovative and different, resisting the commercial influence and continues to produce independent animation, as it has since the 1950's and the days of John and Faith Hubley.
Besides the veteran NY animators and some classic films, such as the Oscar winning “Sundae in New York ”(1983) to the audience-favorite “Dirty Birdy”, this exciting program features many new works by both upcoming and established filmmakers, a variety of techniques and subjects: music videos, comedy, drama and personal expressions. Artist from all ends of the world who call NY a home, are featured in this program. From the popular “Bathtime in Clarkenwell” music video for Real Tuesday Weld, X-rated “Roof Sex”, experimental “Set, set spike”, surreal in the Estonian tradition “Dentist”, to the most recent Oscar nominee “Guard Dog”(2004), this program offers a unique opportunity to see what's happening in the center of the Universe (as we, New Yorkers, like to think).
